The English Learning Area provides students with the opportunity to learn how the English language works and how to use it effectively. The English Curriculum is based on the five outcomes of Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Viewing and strives to improve student educational outcomes and development. Students engage in a challenging and rewarding program of work, each term, which seeks to promote Language, Literature and Literacy in everyday lives. We strongly encourage students to broaden their knowledge through personal reading and viewing programs.
Lower College
Lower College courses have been written to accommodate the requirements of the Australian Curriculum. With a very diverse cohort, we have an extension class in Year 7 for students needing intensive reading, writing and spelling through the Spelling Through Morphographs program. High achieving students with tertiary aspirations in Years 7 to 10 are placed in the enrichment classes to challenge and extend them.
Comparability of classes is achieved through moderation, tests and examinations.
Year 7 and 9 students are required to sit the NAPLAN test early in Term 2. Those students who do not meet the benchmark are required to sit the OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment) during Year 10. After school classes are offered for extra assistance to prepare for OLNA.
Senior College
All students study English in Upper College. We offer ATAR English and ATAR English as an Additional Language or Dialect units for those students considering attending university or higher education. We also offer General English and General English as an Additional Language or Dialect classes for students wishing to undertake vocational options or TAFE at the end of Year 12.
These courses are designed to cater to the diverse needs of our students and provide them with every opportunity for success. Eligibility for enrolment into EAL/D units is outlined by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority.
